Cencosud Buys Makro Colombia for $158M in Cash-and-Carry Push
Chilean retail giant Cencosud snaps up all of Makro Colombia for $158M, expanding its wholesale footprint across Latin America.
Cencosud just made a bold move. The Chilean retail powerhouse announced it's buying 100% of Makro Supermayorista in Colombia for an estimated $158 million — and it's paying entirely out of pocket. No debt, no dilution. Just cash on the barrel.
The deal, executed through its subsidiary Cencosud Internacional SpA, drops 21 Makro stores across 16 Colombian cities into Cencosud's lap. That includes prime real estate in Bogotá. Makro isn't some startup either — it's been operating in Colombia for over 25 years, meaning Cencosud is inheriting a deeply entrenched brand with established wholesale relationships.

This is a straight-up bet on the Cash & Carry format — think bulk buying for small business owners, restaurants, and independent retailers. It's a segment that's been quietly resilient across emerging markets, and Cencosud is clearly reading the room. Wholesale is growing, and this acquisition puts them ahead of rivals who are still figuring out their next move in the region.
For traders watching Latin American consumer and retail plays, this signals Cencosud isn't done shopping. A self-funded $158M acquisition at this scale tells you the balance sheet is healthy and management has regional ambitions baked into the roadmap. Watch for further consolidation moves across South America as competitors respond.
